XVII IOCV CONFERENCE - A message from the chairman

In November 1957, citrus virologists from 11 different nations gathered in Riverside, CA for a conference on citrus virus diseases, and during this meeting the International Organization of Citrus Virologists was formed under the chairmanship of Dr J. M. Wallace. Since then, the IOCV has held a conference every 3 or 4 years in different parts of the world. When we meet in Turkey in October, 2007 we will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of our organization. This is a remarkable achievement, and one hopes that Dr. Wallace would be proud of what he and his colleagues launched back then. During the past half-century, remarkable progress has been made in understanding graft and vector-borne diseases of citrus, allowing us to design control strategies so that countries around the world can produce healthy citrus. Meeting in different countries has allowed us to get to know fellow citrus virologists from many places, learn from each other and personally experience the wide variety of citriculture that exists. Life-long friendships have been made.

Although we have met in some Mediterranean countries in the past, this will be the first time we will be visiting Turkey. Apart from having the honor of hosting our 50th anniversary meeting, Turkey offers IOCV delegates the opportunity to learn about some diseases unknown to many of us, such as chlorotic dwarf and gummy hark. We will also experience the country's wonderful history and culture.

So, please join us in Adana and celebrate 50 amazing years, and thereby ensure that IOCV will continue so that in 2057 it can celebrate its centenary. While we may have solved some of the problems that face us today, new problems have a habit of emerging, and since citrus is one of the most important fruit crops in the world, citrus virologists will have plenty to work on for years to come. Remember, IOCV meetings are not restricted to IOCV members, and anyone with an interest in citrus health and production will find the meeting beneficial- so pass on this invitation.

Looking forward to a successful XVII LOCV Conference and seeing everyone there.

Sincerely

John da Graca, IOCV Chairman
